From scrimshaw carvings to Herman Melville to marine artist Charman, Nantucket has been inspiring artists for centuries. Today, the Grey Lady is still a magnet for creativity. And during summer, when the population swells to almost five times its normal size, Nantucket artisans are given a chance to showcase their work and shine, In this edition, we're honoring those on Nantucket who use the island for inspiration to create beautiful things!

A versatile property with some of the best views and one of the nicest beaches anywhere, this sprawling .94-acre Cliff Beach resort compound is a Nantucket landmark. Originally developed as a private beach club in the 1930s, the property includes a recently constructed, four-unit main beach house, two stand-alone cottages (one historic, but completely renovated, and one recently built), two garages, an entry courtyard/garden, and a large Belgian-block parking area.
This understatedly elegant property neighbors Steps Beach, the Nantucket Cliffs, and a large portion of the island’s conservation lands inhabited by typical New England flora and fauna. A salute to the Quaker and Whaling-era architecture for which Nantucket design is uniquely renowned; the estate boasts typical island elements like weathered grey cedar shingle siding, three and two-bay facade windows, off-center doors, and hip and gable roofs.
Corniced by its self-contained landscaping, the estate celebrates the simplicity of 18th and 19th-century design, which flows harmoniously throughout all six units and the compound’s 7,000 square-foot living space. Its tastefully restrained decor weaves into the protected conservation lands around it, while suggestive vistas conjure the island’s prosperous seafaring-era and colonial heritage.
Winding brick walkups lead to the newly-renovated smaller units that stand out in their own right as inviting luxury homes. Serene seaside views fill their rooms, which are outfitted with oak, reclaimed heart pine and marble flooring, classical revival fireplaces, and upscale fixtures. Bathrooms were envisaged with high-end detailing, marble fixtures, and walk-in showers. Sleek, open kitchens with steel appliances and a grey and white-dominated color palette dialogue harmoniously with the warmth of the living space. Finally, each unit enjoys a mahogany deck, private staircase, and enviable beach entrance for the ultimate vacation experience.
|
Situated less than a mile from the town center in the tony Cliffside neighborhood adjacent to the Beach Club, the compound is part of the only residential/commercial (R/C) zoned property on Nantucket’s entire North Shore. Potential uses include; a spectacular residential compound with entirely separate living spaces for extended family and guests, a luxury boutique hotel, an exclusive private club, a joint venture with other Island accommodation businesses offering a private bathing beach, and large beachfront residences that they lack, or a condominium conversion… just to name a few.
Significantly the property is not in a FEMA Special Flood Hazard Area.

With beachy landscapes, picturesque cobblestone streets, and the inspiring, salty air, it's no wonder, so many artists make Nantucket their home. There are too many of these spectacular talents to name. In this edition, we introduce you to just a few of our favorite artists, photographers, jewelry designers, and potters.

ZOE MARKHAM
Zoe Markham pulls her inspiration from the Earth. And while that might not be a remarkable revelation, what is remarkable about her work is that Zoe can turn anything into a canvas. From oyster shells to these adorable Veuve Cliquot bottles, Zoe's work makes the ordinary extra special.

MICHELE LEMAITRE
Known as the water artist, Michelle Lemaitre connects with water. Through her 2-D sculptural mixed media art, she helps art collectors connect with the water too. Her pieces essentially become a slice of the ocean to hang on the wall. Inspired by the different lights and the ocean's varying strength, her artwork built upon wood panels gives one perspective on how many different looks the sea has. We're into this piece called Purple Passion because it reminds us of staring across the depths of the Atlantic while cruising on a boat.

The artist's impression is the soul of any piece of work, and we love the impression that Ikkya Kagan paints onto the canvas. His landscapes are simple yet complex. His ability to capture the essence of the view while tying his perspective within the brush strokes makes his classic works a worthwhile investment. We also really dig Kagan's Instagram.

Nantucket is loaded with fantastic watering holes, but some are worth visiting a little more than others. Take Slip 14, for example. Located right on Nantucket Harbor, the fresh-from-the-boat seafood and creative cocktail list make this waterview eatery a must for locals and tourists alike. We checked in with their fab and Imbibe Magazine cover-ready mixologist Teddy Nixon to find out what Slip 14 cocktail needs to be in everyone's hands this summer. Here's what he had to say.
|
"I find inspiration for my cocktails in pretty unusual places, like Theo Von, who happens to be one of my favorite comedians. When first crafting this drink, I knew something was missing. That missing link ended up being pear brandy, which is perfect because Theo has a hilarious bit about pears. So, given the connection, I thought it was only fitting to name the drink after him. I hope you'll try making it at home or stop into Slip 14, and we'll make one just for you!"
|
In a shaker, mix the following with ice:
-
1.5 oz Avua cachaca
-
.5 oz St. George pear brandy
-
2 oz yellow watermelon juice
-
.75oz fresh lime
-
.75oz tarragon simple
-
Large bar spoon of Absinthe
Pour into your favorite glass and enjoy in a sunny spot.

Thank you to Teddy and Slip 14 for sharing this refreshing cocktail. We'll be in soon to try it for ourselves! Make a reservation HERE.

Nantucket Jewelry Designers
|
KATHERINE JETTER
Katherine is undoubtedly one of our favorite jewelry designers. Her couture creations are also treasured across the globe. Originally known for her incorporation of Australian opals, Katherine continues to expand and grow as an artist. We adore her new lady of the rings collection. Oh, and if you are on island, be sure to stop by her store, The Vault, which showcases other fabulous couture designers.
|
|
HEIDI WEDDENDORF
A gold and silversmith by trade, Heidi Weddendorf crafts pieces that speak to Nantucket's nautical nature and history. Because she makes each piece by hand, no two are the same. Owning a one-of-a-kind piece is a jewelry rush for even novice collectors. We think these Nantucket Knot bracelets would slip in perfectly with any bracelet stack.
|
|
SUSAN LISTER LOCKE
Voted best jeweler on Nantucket for the past six years, Susan Lister Locke's designs have become a favorite of celebrities and us! We're mildly obsessed with this gorgeous Moby Dick-inspired Nantucket Nocturne Opal Pendant. You can almost see the Pequod rolling in the massive Atlantic waves, with the great Moby Dick watching and waiting. Pieces like this make it clear why Susan's designs are so beloved.

Simply breathtaking, that is all we can say about Eve Christa Ceramics. Ordinary tableware becomes extraordinary with unique glazes, like these pearlesque pieces from her Sophia Collection. Gorgeous hues and thoughtful designs make all of Eva Christa's pottery covetable.
|
|
SAM HONEY POTTERY
Samara Monfette is the potter behind this line of functional pottery pieces. The Rhode Island native makes customizable pieces that will fit any tablescape. Different glazes and stamps transform pieces from bright and airy to highly chic, like this dark starfish dotted charcuterie plate.

GARTH GRIMMER
Fans of Nantucket photographer Garth Grimmer span the globe. And while he does capture the quintessential Nantucket moments, we love how he memorializes the special moments that might otherwise be overlooked. For example, check out this time-lapsed photo of stars over the oldest house on Nantucket (full image not shown). Pretty cool, don't you think?
|
|
NANTUCKET DRONE
Drone Nantucket offers a view only seen by passing planes and birds sailing on the breeze. We love the opportunity to peek at a different perspective of this gorgeous island. Check out this ariel view of Nantucket beachgoers. The colorful umbrellas become sprinkles of confetti on the extra-fine sand.

A freelance photographer, Bill Hoenk has found commercial success photographing a wide array of subjects. But, of course, the award-winning photographer's works that attract our attention are of Nantucket. In particular, we're extra fond of his seascapes and the contrast between colors and shades. Plus, we could stare at the Nantucket ocean all day long.
